If you live in California and you want to be a car owner, it is likely that you do not have millions to spare for brand new, multiple autos. Visit a junkyard in California and you are sure to find a number of salvage cars for sale. Some of these cars are heavily rebuilt, offering the driver maximum comfort while on the road. In part, this is due to the fact that the state of California ensures that every salvaged automobile is registered and examined for road worthiness before it is allowed to be used by anyone.

If you do not live in California, you can still benefit from owning a car by checking the websites of some of the salvage car dealers in the state. It may also be more rewarding for you if you look for salvage cars auctions within the state. Again, browsing online will give you an edge and help you find a good auction site.

When you buy a salvaged car, you will have to reregister it with the appropriate department in California. The following is a list of the items that will be required in the re-registration process of your salvage car:

  1. You will need the registration PDF document, called the REG 343.
  2. You will provide any of the following: California certificate of title, application for duplicate or a salvage certificate.
  3. You should provide the CHP certificate of inspection, or the vehicle’s REG 343 verification.
  4. The certificates of the brake and the light will be required.
  5. A set amount of registration fees are also required.
  6. In addition to the above, in no particular order, the following list of items may also be required:
  7. The REG 4017, which is the Permanent Trailer Identification certification.
  8. The REG 4008, which is either the combined gross weight of vehicle or the declaration of the vehicle’s gross weight.
  9. The REG 262, which is the car’s form for transfer and reassignment.
  10. The smog and the weight certification.
  11. The REG 256, which is the statement of facts form.
  12. You may also need to hand in the existing car license plates.

Apart from the salvage automobile, there is also a category of used vehicles referred to as revived salvage auto. This is a vehicle which has been reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in California by an insurance organization or the vehicle’s owner as a total loss, but has been revived to a usable condition. The registration of such vehicles requires some specific items a little different from the list presented above. Some additions to the list above for revived salvage registration include:

  1. An application, which should be signed by all owners listed.
  2. A proof of ownership of the vehicle.

The vehicle will be inspected by the DMV of California or, if necessary, the highway patrol team of California will inspect the vehicle before the DMV.
