A Brief Guide to Buying Your First ATV

One piece of advice we give to people looking for wrecked ATVs for sale on our website is to choose the recreational vehicle based on the rider’s age and experience. People with little or no experience often end up buying ATVs whose engines are too big for their level of experience – a classic mistake! If you’re getting your feet wet in the sport or buying for a child, it’s safe to start with a smaller All Terrain Vehicle. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), suggests the right ATV engine size to choose according to age. Children aged between 6 to 11, for instance, should go with a 70cc-engine ATV. Here’s some more information to get you started with your All Terrain Vehicle shopping.

Purpose of the Vehicle
While “experience” and “age” are two key elements to consider when purchasing your first ATV, the purpose for which you need the four-wheel off-roader is equally important. Do you need it simply to blast through the woods or for motocross racing? Are you going to use it for hunting, farming, or some other work? Answering such questions helps you narrow down your choice, and select an ATV that best suits your needs.

Fun
If you need a quad bike purely for recreation – exploring the forests, trails, and kicking some dirt – begin with an entry-level package that offers an engine somewhere between 125 to 250cc. The power should suffice for your adventure needs, without having to struggle to control it.

Work
When it comes to an ATV for work purposes, consider a Utility Terrain Vehicle or UTV. Popular with campers, hunters, and farmers, UTVs have more powerful engines than ATVs and are ideal for towing or pushing. They often include a large dumping rear cargo hold and provide space for two people. That means you can take your spouse or dog along. In addition, UTVs are easily customizable, and you can find many machines fitted with cab kits, LED lighting, in-cab heaters, and stereo systems.

Finalizing the Brand
Kawasaki, Polaris, Honda, and Yamaha, offer superior quality ATVs in all sizes, shapes, and power. If, for instance, you’re looking for a package in the 90cc engine range, Honda TRX90, Yamaha Raptor 90, and the Kawasaki KFX90 are great options. The Polaris Outlaw also offers a variety of models in almost all engine sizes – 50, 90, 450, and 525cc. Note that ATVs from all these brands are available with a bunch of features, such as liquid cooled engines, power seats, power steering, and electric start. However, unless you’ve honed your ATV riding skills, it makes sense to buy a low-end model, just to get you started.

What gear to buy?
Riding an ATV is super-fun but can also be dangerous if you don’t protect yourself with the “right” gear. ATV riding is much like riding a dirtbike – the only difference being the number of wheels. Getting bumped off in the woods or on a trail is possible, which is why riders must wear helmets and other protective gear, such as chest protectors, over-the-ankle boots, long pants, and goggles to stay safe when riding ATVs.

Tips for Safe Ride

  • Don’t ride a ATV on paved roads
  • Don’t provide adult ATVs to children under 16
  • Always wear a helmet and other protective gear
  • Never carry more people than the ATV is designed for
  • Enroll for a hands-on ATV safety course

Why begin with a Used ATV?
Buying a used ATV has its benefits, whether it’s a bank repo or wrecked ATV for sale, as it requires little to no repairs. It costs you less, and you’d rather dent and bend it than a brand new quad. A used package is the right choice to get your feet wet in the sport, and there’s a whole world of options for you out there.
